PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES (Varsity & JV)
SANTA FE BANDS has two Percussion Ensembles: Varsity and JV. Varsity is comprised of all percussionists in the Wind Symphony. JV is comprised of all percussionists in the Symphonic and Concert Bands. The percussion ensembles focus on developing both fundamental advanced skills that will prepare students to be successful in ensemble playing beyond high school. In addition to preparing their concert parts for Wind Symphony/Symphonic Band/Concert Band, the Percussion Ensembles perform major works within the percussion ensemble repertoire, including western and non-western musics. The Percussion Ensembles explores diverse music from different cultures and traditions around the world.
The percussion ensemble performs several times throughout the year, including at local and regional festivals, contests, as well as local concerts and fundraisers. Members of the Varsity percussion ensemble compete with the Wind Symphony at NMAA State Concert Contest. Membership in the Percussion Ensembles is by director approval only and students are expected to take private percussion lessons with an approved instructor, as part of their ensemble grade.
The Percussion Ensembles rehearse during the school day, and occasionally during twilight period, as-needed. Percussion Ensemble members are expected to attend one outside-of-class sectional rehearsal per week and are held to all NMAA, SFPS, and SFHS eligibility requirements.
